Amateur Review by Jean Kincaid
WOW, Have you guys read Pamela
Griffin's, "BEACON OF TRUTH?" I just finished it and it was superb.
Now, you already know how I love "words," and she is a master at
stringing them together, making the reader sit on the edge of the chair, or
swallow roughly over the tightness binding her throat.. For example....
"Julie smiled and studied the brightening clouds laced with rose and gold.
All vestiges of darkness had disappeared in the light of the rising sun. And
like the sun did when it chased away the night, God had infiltrated this house
once filled with heavy darkness, and covered it with His bright beacon of
truth."
Or, or, or......
"Her eyes widened as she stared down the barrel of a .38 pointed straight
at her heart. "At last I have you where I want you, Miss Rae."
And the culinary delight you will find in this book is heavenly.
Example...
...forcing the "curried fish" past
...choked on "wild rice"....
...gulp of "lemon tea"....
...peach cobbler topped with a mound of vanilla ice cream...
...pancakes drenched with maple syrup and butter...
...sardine sandwiches...
...Mrs Ruggles chocolate cake...
...a bite of smoked mackerel...
...three-bean salad...
...a raisin cookie in one hand, a frosted cupcake in the other...
...sardines smothered in mayonnaise and mustard, with relish, sliced cucumbers,
red onions and tomatoes followed...
...extracting the succulent white meat from a lobster tail, dipping it in the
bowl of melted butter....
Oh yes, umm hummm, all this is just sprinkled liberally throughout the book. Not
only do you get to "feast" on the story, you get a "taste"
of home cooked meals, scratch baking, and super cool meals "out" at
Red Lobster. Ahhh, what a blessing to travel with Ms Griffin as she plots the
course of her characters, while relaxing in your favorite chair, or lying across
the bed while the rain beats down on the tin roof.....
BEACON
OF TRUTH
Absolutely terrific story! A must read! Pamela kept me on the edge of my
seat, paragraph after paragraph, page after page. Are you or someone you
know experiencing mounting unfairness and waiting for God's ultimate
goodness? BEACON OF TRUTH is the perfect encouragement. . .

Craig
Watson knows the moment he lays eyes on Ivy Leander that she is the woman he
wants to marry. There is just one problem—Ivy won't give him the time of day.
The prim and proper lady from Boston snubs her nose at him and everyone else in
Leaning Tree, but Craig believes there is more to Ivy than just her pretty looks
and fancy ways, and he is determined to test his theory.
When
her mother marries a Nebraska farmer and they move to Leaning Tree, Ivy is
stunned by how backwards the small Nebraska town is compared to Boston. And
nobody seems to like her except for the dirty blacksmith. As if she'd lower
herself to marry an uneducated laborer. She hasn't totally lost hope that her
Boston grandmother will come to her rescue—if only she can last that long.
As
time goes by, Ivy begins to see how her snide behavior is hurting those she
loves. Still, she can't quite resolve her deep desire to return to Boston with
the life she now lives in a small, dirty soddy. Craig always has a teasing smile
whenever they meet, and in spite of her determination to ignore the handsome
man, she finds her heart thawing. Can Craig help Ivy discover the pleasures of
small-town life? Or will she flee Nebraska to live with her Boston grandmother?
ONE
WINTRY NIGHT is the first of two novellas in the 2-in-one book, A PRAIRIE
CHRISTMAS. Author Pamela M. Griffin does an excellent job bringing to life the
small town of Leaning Tree, Nebraska, with its Welsh immigrants and typical
townsfolk. It is a heartwarming story about dealing with change and learning to
love people who are different than what you're used to. This is the lesson that
Ivy learns as she begins to put aside her wants and hurts, so she can see that
those around her have their own problems and desires.
Craig
is a delightful hero. I loved his teasing personality and his ability to look
past Ivy's frosty outer layer to see the beautiful woman that she could be, once
her defenses were lowered. Ivy's new Welsh relatives add an interesting flavor,
as do the gypsies that readers will meet toward the end of the story. ONE WINTRY
NIGHT is a wonderful romance that is guaranteed to tug at your heartstrings and
leave you smiling. (220 pages, $10.95)
